Valentin Funk and Sohne were action circa 1858-1870 in Suhl. 33 - 3/8" barrels with mushroom bead front sight, smooth flat rib with silver inlaid "V. Funk & Sohne in Suhl". Ramrod, probably the original, with threaded head for worm and jag together, retained by a pair of ferrules before feeding into a reinforced mouth in the shape of a wolf's head. Second ferrule with sling loop. Percussion locks with simple floral engraving utilize a roller "frizzen" to operate a nipple shield, with fishform cocks engrave en suite with locks (right cock a replacement). Right lock inlaid "V. FUNK & SOHNE", right "IN SUHL", both in gold. Dark hardwood grip (ebony?) in a flowy, Jaeger style with inset silver medallion featuring a German hunter with his gun and dog. Floral finial sprays forth from tip of pistol grip. Checkered wrist with intruding floral carving and silver shield with S F initials. Beaded cheekpiece with floral offshoot at rear. Hardwood buttplate. Vacant slot in toe line for a sling stud. CONDITION: Barrels are essentially gunmetal patina, with splotches of oxidation throughout and even pitting. Silver inlay is legible with some minor lifting. Locks and cocks a smooth chocolate patina on right, left gunmetal grey with spotted oxidation. Left nipple shield has split at tip which prevents it from behind retracted. Stock very good with numerous handling marks, one crack ahead of right lockplate. Mechanically fine, with exception given to right nipple shield mentioned above, bores are good with some even oxidation. Funk's gunsmithing is very highly respected and his work is prized today.
