Most likely made in the mid 1880's, this gun exhibits fine plain finish but was no doubt a higher grade and high quality gun which is typical of what William R. Schaefer was known for. The gun has an unengraved action and lockplates which are only marked "Wm. R. Schaefer". The fine original buttstock with marble cake grain is checkered in two point pattern through the wrist, has a small brass oval near toe with initials "C.R."(?) and terminates with a replacement silvers type pad. The splinter forend is near fully checkered with Deeley release and triangular ebony tip. The barrels are a beautiful set of Bernard Damascus with steel front bead and Damascus top rib with makers name engraved. CONDITION: Very good. Action retains about 30% original case color, mostly turned a mousey gray, but still present and stronger in protected areas. Barrels retain more than 85% fine original Bernard Damascus pattern. Bores are bright and shiny with only a couple of beginning minor pits noted. Stocks are very good and retain most of what appears to be their original finish with some finish added for preservation. Mechanics are crisp. A rare gun and as elegant as the day is long. JSL
