This is a US marked Schofield made in 1876-77 for the US Cavalry. After they were dropped from service, several hundred were purchased by agents for Wells Fargo & Co. The barrels were usually cut to five inches and many were nickel plated at time. They were then stamped as such, usually on the right side as is this example, along with an inventory or rack number, in this case, 4331 which matches serial number. It is a tip-down model with original service issue walnut grips of whose cartouche is no longer readable. The hammer and trigger were not plated. It indexes and locks up tight. Bore is sharp. Cylinder has matching 4331. CONDITION: Retains at least 85% of the re-applied nickle finish. Fine and historic revolver.
