Production of the 1903 Springfield fell dramatically after the first World War, as that was to be "the War to end all Wars", and arming America was no longer a priority. Most collectors consider the 1920-30's Springfields as the finest ever made. The barrel date of January 1923 matches the serial range. The inspector stamp on left side is the rarely seen "WJS" of William Sheriffs, who only inspected the Model 1903 from 1918 to 1922. All other correct parts include wide finger groove double bolt stock, 2700 yard rear sight, all milled part, and finely checkered trapdoor buttplate. There is an "RA-P" Raritan Arsenal inspector stamp which indicates it went back for inspection at one time. CONDITION: TE reading: 2. ME reading: 1. Metal retains about 95% of the dull blue-black matte finish. The stocks are excellent, dark walnut with usual minor handling marks. Comes with a fine 1918 dated Boyt US sling. A really nice and very scarce rifle.
