Circa 1989. A spectacular 20 bore game gun with blacked, nitro proofed, demi-bloc 27" barrels with 3" chambers. Barrels are nicely appointed with ejectors and a filed, narrow, raised, ventilated rib. Rib with round steel front bead sight. Fixed chokes are Modified in over barrel and Improved Cylinder in under barrel. Top barrel on right reads ".614", "20" in diamond, "3" MAG.", "4 TONS", and with appropriate proof markings. Left side reads "J. PURDEY & SONS. AUDLEY HOUSE, SOUTH AUDLEY STREET. LONDON. ENGLAND.". Bottom of barrel with "28954" (serial number), "72019" and "20". Barrel flat reads with appropriate proofs, "LP / 87", ".614", "20" in diamond, "3"" MAG, "4 TONS". Coin finished sidelock action with cocking indicators, double triggers, bold foliate scroll engraved top lever with checkered thumb, v-shaped checkered safe slide with a bit of floral scroll embellishment. "SAFE" is engraved. Action is engraved with large acanthus leaf scroll and reads "J. PURDEY & SONS" at bar. Bottom action engraved with matching scroll and "J. PURDEY & SONS.", "LONDON ENGLAND.". "S.J.K." for engraver Steven J. Kelly is engraved just ahead of trigger guard. Coin finished trigger guard with right hand rolled edged is engraved with acanthus foliate scroll and extends down through a long bottom strap with matched engraving and serial number "28954". The dark honey colored European walnut stock with dark smokey patterning is built with an English straight hand with tight checkering, vacant gold oval, and is finished by a checkered butt. Game forend with matched figuring and checkering is fit with an Anson push release with engraved escutcheon. Internal iron metal is coin finished and polished, marked with guns serial number "28954". Gun lives in a dark brow leather "VC" (very compact) case with snap caps, paperwork, and cleaning equipment. Case lid with charge card and paper trade label. CONDITION: Excellent. Barrels are excellent, but going slightly plum-y. Bores are excellent. Action, triggers, and ejectors are all mechanically sound. Stock and forend are very good to excellent. Case is excellent with minor handling/storage marks. Very nice piece.
