Absolutely stunning original Colt U.S. Navy overstamp Thompson with Cutts compensator with matte finish and unnumbered 50 round “L” drum with New York, NY address. This is the first public offering of this gun to the collector community since its purchase by consignor from Robert Cox. Consignor stated that he was a regular at gun shows where Cox would set up “many” Thompson machine guns for sale. Over time, the consignor said he would purchase the very best condition specimen. If later, a better condition, even if only slightly, appeared, he would “trade-up”. This gun was the culmination of this practice. In addition to the typical Colt and Auto Ordnance markings on the sides of the receiver, and the added “U.S. NAVY” with overstamped “8” over the “1” in the model designation. Visible numbers are all matching. “JHB” inspection mark clearly visible to the rear of the ejection port on the right side of the receiver. Internal parts are original Colt bolt with 1928 actuator, spring and buffer. Stock retains anchor proofmark below attachment iron. One matte finish 50 round original “NEW YORK N.Y., U.S.A.” 1920 patent dates 50 round drum is included. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is near excellent deep lustrous blue original finish with only the slightest loss of finish here and there with a little speckling to the right of the patent dates. Charging handle slot just beautiful. Only when bolt is withdrawn can one see slight thinning to the finish underneath the cocking handle to the high edges and some scratches where the buttstock attaches to the lower assembly. Buttplate finish is slightly thinning to a pleasing gray patina at the heel and toe ends with ever better original blue finish toward the center. Mechanics are crisp and positive. Bolt near excellent. All three pieces of wood are exceptional with a rich brown color and very few light handling nicks. Drum magazine has a near excellent dull blue finish. This is a select fire machine gun. Without a doubt one of the very finest condition specimens available for private ownership. THIS IS A NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT ITEM AND REQUIRES BATF APPROVAL PRIOR TO TRANSFER. THIS ITEM IS FULLY TRANSFERABLE ON AN ATF FORM 3 OR 4 AS CURIO & RELIC ELIGIBLE. JWK 2020-05-053
