This is one of 50 rifles supplied by Colt to Aberdeen Proving Ground at the time M203 grenade launchers were being tested. In addition to the “PROPERTY OF U.S. GOVT” marking, one immediately notices the unusual “M-16A1” marking and the professionally applied rack number "39" to the underside of the trigger guard. Other early features include the curved edge buttplate, triangular handguards, pivoting sling swivels, chrome lined bore, and windage adjustable only rear sight, and the composition of the furnishings. Two 20-round Colt AR-15 marked magazines with black bottom plates stamped, ".556", a black web sling and muzzle cap are included with this lot. Electronic NFA registry indicates “COLT” as the manufacturer. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is near excellent original finish. Furnishings are near excellent with perhaps a handling mark or two discernible upon the closest inspection. Bore is near excellent, shiny and bright. Bolt face also near excellent. Mechanics are crisp. About as nice a specimen as one can hope to find of a U.S marked M-16 that also has historical connection. Something for the discerning and forward-thinking collector/investor, or for someone who just wants to get one of the best condition M16s around with early production features. THIS IS A NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT ITEM AND REQUIRES BATF APPROVAL PRIOR TO TRANSFER. THIS ITEM IS FULLY TRANSFERABLE ON AN ATF FORM 3 OR 4 AS CURIO AND RELIC ELIGIBLE. JWK 2024-12-96.
