This is a very seldom encountered Chinese Type 50 machine gun manufactured in 1950, and making this piece likely a veteran bringback of the Korean War. This gun comes from an estate situation, so the specifics regarding its acquisition have been lost. The Chinese Type 50 is a very nearly exact copy of the Soviet Russian PPSh-41 machine gun, and parts, including the magazines, are interchangeable between the two. Sometimes the Chinese even went so far as to copy the Russian markings, but this is not the case here. This gun has clear Chinese Shenyang Dawn Arsenal markings on the top of the shroud, forward of the trunnion. Bolt and lower assembly serial numbers match the receiver number. One 30 round Russian curved stick magazine and one non-matching electro-penciled SN 71 round drum are included with this lot, as well as an unmarked web and leather sling. Electronic NFA registry indicates “CHINA” as the manufacturer, and “PPSH41” as the model. Correction of model to “Type 50” can be requested prior to the next transfer if so desired by the winning bidder, or it can be transferred as it is. It is noteworthy that the initials “WJL” have been added as a suffix below the serial number. This cataloger is going to suggest that this gun may have at one time been a deactivated gun, and these initials may be those of the reactivator. This in no way affects the Curio & Relic status of this gun, and aside from these initials being part of the serial number in the NFA registry, there is nothing in the gun's condition that indicates it was ever deactivated. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is near excellent professional refinish with some barely discernible scratches and pitting in some places. Still, this gun presents exceptionally well, with particularly attractive Chinese arsenal markings. Wood stock has some light scars, but is of high quality, better than this cataloger has ever seen on any Russian produced model, and if asked how to tell a Chinese gun from a Russian made PpSh, this cataloger would say, “the Chinese guns are better made and finished”. Bore is extremely fine, shiny and bright. Bolt face is fine. Mechanics are crisp. This is a select fire machine gun. Chinese Type 50 machine guns are scarce items in the United States, and when they surface for public sale, they command the attention of a growing number of Chinese firearms collectors. This specimen is a particularly fine and desirable one. THIS IS A NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT ITEM AND REQUIRES BATF APPROVAL PRIOR TO TRANSFER. THIS ITEM IS FULLY TRANSFERABLE ON AN ATF FORM 3 OR 4 AS CURIO AND RELIC ELIGIBLE. JWK 2024-12-19.
