Circa 1860s. 8" clip point blade bowie marked on the blade's face "G. WOSTENHOLM & SON, WASHINGTON WORKS, SHEFFIELD" with the ricasso marked "I*XL". Blade is etched with the words "THE SOLDIERS COMPANION, I*XL" in an oval surrounded by scrollwork. Stag handle scales with iron pins and nickel silver reinforced guard. 12 - 1/2" overall length. Red morocco leather sheath with nickel silver tip and throat, the throat with attached belt loop. CONDITION: Blade with original polish, appearing unsharpened with a small amount of scattered spidering. Light scuffing to surface of sheath. A somewhat fancy Wostenholm bowie produced for Civil War soldiers in a wonderful state of preservation. Formerly part of the Tommie Jones collection.
