The Hoke Snake, circa late 1930's, is a perfect example of how manufacturers tried to evade gambling laws by re-manufacturing existing slot machines and adding the challenge of completing a skillful effort to receive potential winnings. In this case, popping a ball into the snakes mouth. After inserting a coin and pulling the handle, the operator must get the metal ball into the snake's mouth before receiving their indicated reward if a winning combination is made on the three reels. There are only a handful of various "Snake" machines known to exist and without a doubt, this particular example is the best, not only in appearance but condition as well. This example features a snake motif on the upper and lower castings along with the skill element. Several versions of this machine exist today either in escalator model or gooseneck model but to the best of our knowledge, this is the only known example with the distinctive upper/lower snake castings. Other known examples, though original, do not have the same look, often they were conversions and did not have both of these elaborate snake castings. This example is in untouched, all original, working condition and included are some Hoke tokens and keys. If one were to own only one three reeler this is the one to have, the best of the best!
