Octagonal 40" barrel in a .48 caliber smoothbore. Both dovetailed front blade sight and notched rear sight have set of two engraved lines in front and behind. Top flat of barrel signed “MOLL” in block letters. Barrel fastened with brass screws on one side and handmade brass washers on opposite side. Possibly made by either Peter Moll from Hellertown or Nathan Moll, who moved west but worked in the business, made around 1840. Percussion lock stamped with two birds, foliage and “WARRANTED”. Four-piece pierced patch box engraved on lid with encircled star surrounded by foliage and rocker –panel engraved borders. Engraved German silver star wrist escutcheon with screw in center. Left side of buttstock inlaid with a German silver engraved deer above cheek piece and engraved dog inlay behind cheek piece. Brass buttplate, trigger guard, ramrod ferrules,open brass nose cap, unique and small “winged” sideplate, and engraved toe plate. Very good condition. Barrel and lock with some pitting around breech and scattered dark spots. Stock excellent, as refinished, brass polished.
