The First Model American was the first large frame, large caliber holster pistol with the bored through cylinder for self-contained cartridges made in the United States and precedes the Colt S.A.A. by two years. Some of the more notable Western folk heroes to favor this revolver were Texas Jack Omohundro and Dallas Stoudenmire. Some of these were found to have been used at the Battle of Little Bighorn. The gun has been cleaned and polished and is basically a shiny grey patina with some areas of salt and pepper texture and sharp markings. Very good original walnut grips. Indexes perfectly. Strong clean bore. It is an iconic Old West six gun that saw hard use during the Western expansion after the Civil War. Factory letter states that this revolver was shipped on October 2, 1871 to M.W. Robinson Co., New York City with an 8" barrel, smooth walnut grips, finish not mentioned. This was S&W's largest American distributor.
