Slightly curved single fullered blade featuring etched decoration on right side with scrolls, arms motifs and patriotic eagle carrying "E PLURIBUS UNUM" banner above, the other side with scrolls and large "U.S." with cannons and patriotic arms motifs, right side of ricasso marked "Ames Mfg. Co./Chickopee/Mass." Standard Model 1850 cast brass hilt with pierced guard and shark skin wrapped grip with braided brass wire. Complete with steel scabbard with brass mounts. Scabbard inscribed on right side of drag "Lieut. Jas. Long/company E/8th Regiment/N.J.S.V./1861." James Long mustered in September 27, 1861 as a 1st Lieutenant in Company E. He was wounded on May 5, 1862 at Williamsburg, Virginia and died of his wounds June 7, 1862 at Fortress Monroe, Virginia. Complete with a large archive of information on Essex County, New Jersey, James Long and his military history, and information on his company. Very good condition, blade retains polished bright surface with some light wear and a few minor spots. Hilt polished bright, a few light marks from use and grip excellent. Scabbard very good, steel has grey patina, brass polished bright with clear presentation. A very nice historic Civil War presentation sword!
