EXTREMELY FINE WIDMANN MARINE OFFICERS SWORD CIRCA 1835.This is among the finest examples of a signed Widmann officer''s sword you will find. Andrew Mowbray, in his book THE AMERICAN EAGLE-POMMEL SWORD shows an identical specimen as figure 51A p 195. Our example is in excellent condition with a fine grip and a high condition blue and gold blade decorated with military motifs. "F.W. WIDMANN/PHILADa" cartouche is well struck and easy to read on bottom side of cross guard as can be seen in photos. The brass mounted leather scabbard is complete in matching fine condition, retaining original frog button. These swords are known to have been worn by both Marines and Naval NCO''s, and are rarely offered with blue and gold etched blades especially in such exceptional condition. SIZE: CONDITION: Fine to extra fine overall. Leather grip is complete as is its wire though leather is worn, chipped and scuffed at high areas. Brass hilt and scabbard mounts are clean with light brass patina, retaining protected areas of bright original polish, which appears like gold plating. Leather scabbard body is sound and solid retaining most of its original black color with craquelure and 1/2" chip at throat on edge. Blade is overall bright retaining most of its original luster, blue and gold decoration with light areas of pin prick pitting and staining. There are 2 small soldered areas on top edge of throat and scabbard with brass wires attached so the sword could be displayed, that brass wire is broken on lower mount. 50136-1 JS (3,000-5,000)
