SPECTACULAR AND RARE WINCHESTER MODEL 1895 DELUXE FLATSIDE RIFLE FACTORY ENGRAVED IN NUMBER 8 STYLE. WINCHESTER 1895 4977 38-72 ESA Cal. 38-72. 26" full octagon bbl with a Marbles improved ivory bead front sight, rear sight is a sporting flat top. Bbl marked "38-72 WCF" and is encased in scrollwork and gold band at chamber. Winchester proof mark which is located under the thumbprint of rear sight elevator. Proof marked also on left side of receiver. Receiver is engraved in $14 No. 8 style with two caribou engraved in left panel and one moose engraved in right panel all encased in flowing grape vines. Appended metal is engraved in fine scrollwork. All screw heads are engraved except the two buttplate screws. Has case colored hammer and trigger, lever is blued. Full-figured fancy American walnut stock features $5 style "E" carving and fitted with capped pistol grip and rubber buttplate. Forearm also comes equipped with an ebony black insert at schnable end of forearm. Stock finish is of a high luster piano type finish. Lower tang marked with "4810" with "RB XXX". No assembly line number can be found on the stock. Accompanied by a Cody Firearms Records Office search sheet which confirms the special order features: Fancy Pistol Grip Stock, Carved $5; Hard rubber Shotgun butt; Engraved $14 and shipped Feb 12, 1898. Also a Repair and Return order in May, 1906 which accounts for the proof marks, etc. PROVENANCE: The spectacular collections of Ray Bentley featuring the finest and rarest deluxe antique Winchesters in the world. CONDITION: Very Fine. Octagon bbl retains 96-97% orig blue with some very scattered light to moderate pitting that does not detract. Receiver retains on left side 95-96% blued, right side retains 94-96% blue with some light surface scratches. Hammer retains 90-95% of it's orig case color. Left side of stock retains 96-97% of a high luster finish with no slivers of wood missing or cracks in the stock. Right side of stock is a 97-97% finish with few impressions and few visible scratches. No slivers of wood missing or cracks on the upper or lower portion of tang. Box magazine is of a light blue with balance turning patina. Lever retains a solid 90-95% orig blue with some high edge losses. Bore is bright and shiny. Cycles correctly, all mechanics are fine. 53091-210 MS (35,000-55,000)
