This carbine was produced between 1863 and 1865 with approximately 50,000 manufactured. It has been post-war altered by Springfield to .50 caliber rimfire with the added Stabler cut off, sleeved barrel. These arms were often arsenal refinished and restocked; markings are often weak. 11,000 were altered between 1867 and 1868. Featured a full round barrel, single band, post front sight, folding ladder rear sight. Top of frame is stamped "SPENCER RIFLE CO BOSTON PATD MARCH 1860". CONDITION: Barrel retains 98% of the reapplied finish, as does barrel band. Frame colors are basically a mottled grey. Stocks are very good, proud to metal, revarnished with a repaired crack on right forearm, and a small repaired crack at left bar. Inspector stamp on left side visible but not readable. Three groove rifling is strong with usual minor abrasions. Fine action. Good representative example of a Civil War Saddle Ring Carbine that was converted after the war for use on the Western Frontier. One of the more recognizable carbines of the Civil War era.
