One of the few shotguns available in the 1950's and 1960's made for the powerful 3 - 1/2" ten gauge cartridge, the J. J. Sarasqueta guns were available in many grades. Their boxlock gun was the most common, this deeply engraved sidelock model is quite scarce. It has 28 - 1/2" chopper lump barrels fitted with slightly raised matted rib. Makers name and address, along with steel type, are engraved on tops of barrels. Breech ends have 2 inches of deeply cut acanthus scroll surrounding vignettes of flying ducks. Barrel flats are stamped with Spanish nitro proofs. Barrels are fitted with H&H type self-opening assist spring. Coin finished sidelock action features non-automatic safety, hidden third fastener, side clips, gold band tumbler end cocking indicators, bushed strikers, H&H type hand detachable locks, and double triggers (front articulated). Action is deeply engraved with full coverage acanthus and scroll surrounding pointing dogs on front portions of locks. Bottom of action has "La Paloma" Sarasqueta trademark. Blued trigger guard has more scroll on bow, and has model in gold on tang. Lightly marbled European walnut round knob pistol grip buttstock measures 14 - 1/8" over black Pachmayr pad. Stock features drop points and point pattern checkering on thin diamond hand. Matching splinter ejector forend has Anson release. CONDITION: Excellent. Barrels retain 95%+ original blue, with some light marks. Action retains most of its original coin finish, slightly darkened with accumulated oil. Trigger guard is lightly silvered. Stocks retain most of their original finish with some added oil, with numerous light scratches and bumps. Checkering lightly worn. Bores are excellent. Action is tight. Ejectors are strong. Safety button returns to safe position upon firing right barrel, so safety must be moved again for second shot. This appears to be original design. An unusual big bore shotgun. MGM19
