Extremely rare 1913 Webley & Scott Mark 1 with rotary sight, one of the first 50 pistols shipped to the army stores at Weedon in Lake June, 1913, the first to be fitted with a rotary sight and hammer safety but without a stock groove. (Webley & Scott Automatic Pistols by Gordon Bruce, page 253.) As per all Mark 1 pistols issued to the Royal Horse Artillery, this example has a 5 inch barrel with a fixed front sight and a rotary rear sight, graduated in four increments from 50-200 yards. Hammer has been fitted with a rotating safety lever to provide additional security in addition to the usual grip safety. Left side of slide is marked with the winged bullet "W&S" logo followed by a three line Webley & Scott address denoting the year 1913. Full serial number on frame in front of trigger guard. Standard British proofing on top of the chamber with acceptances on many of the small parts, including the trigger, left/right tang, grip safety, and right side of hammer. Hard rubber grips, each secured with a central screw within escutcheon, the left panel having a scribed broad arrow in central diamond. Base of frame with rotatable lanyard ring. Original magazine drilled with six indicator holes. CONDITION: At least 97-98% of a careful, professional restoration, with planes remaining flat, corners sharp, and original markings very clear. Bright bore with strong rifling. Left panel with a small vertical crack behind the slide release and small loss on leading edge; small bruises and areas of blunting on both panels. Perfect manual mechanics. A super rare pistol, one of the first sent to the Royal Horse Artillery for evaluation, and immediate predecessor the more recognizable, slotted version that was fitted to a flat board shoulder stock.
