This “Springfield” model 1863 musket was actually a product of the Whitney Arms Company after the Civil War. Manufactured using surplus Springfield parts. Rough case nose cap. Large eagle over "WHITNEY ARMS CO." stamped into the right side of the butt. 1863 dates on lock and barrel. Proper Civil War period cartouches. Unmarked buttplate. Most likely Whitney produced trigger guard. Standard .58 caliber, rifled. Accompanied by a standard US marked model 1855 socket bayonet in a steel scabbard. CONDITION: All metal surfaces retain a pleasing patina overall with clear markings. Some original Whitney applied blue on the barrel bands. Stock is fine with some light handling marks and clear sharp cartouches and marking on right side, with a deep 1/8" ding through the "Co". There are some chips out at the end of the stock on either side of the ramrod channel at the nose cap. Bore is fine with sharp rifling. Fine mechanical function. Bayonet has been cleaned at some point with some light pitting.
