Lot features a rare Joslyn rifle considered to be the first unaltered breechloading rifle produced at a US Armory with approximately 3,000 made. Wonderfully period decorated with an "Indian Medicine Wheel" and the initials "J.P.". Breechblock is marked with "M" and the number "726", but no Joslyn marks. Lock is marked 1864 and has an Eagle and "US SPRINGFIELD" in front of the hammer. Barrel has blade front sight and folding rear sight and is fitted for a socket bayonet. Original steel ramrod. Wood stock especially made for this rifle (not a modification) with a design in brass tacks and the initials "J.P.". "US" marked buttplate. Two barrel bands. CONDITION: Overall condition is fine with a shootable bore and most metal parts turning a silvery patina. Stock has heavy usage marks with dings and scratches. A fine example of a late Civil War issued Joslyn Rifle.
