One of the scarcer "Mississippi" by George Tryon, Philadelphia with only 5,000 manufactured. This example is dated 1844, which conflicts with Flayderman's statement that they were made 1846-1848. Dated on barrel tang "185_?". Standard pattern with attractive brass mounts and walnut full stock. Lock markings are crisp and clear with no real pitting. Barrel is smooth steel patina with clear stamping at breech. Brass mounts are crisp. Bore is good with sharp rifling and would clean to excellent. Rifle stock with hand worn patina throughout and the usual wear around lock mortise and offside. No inspector's mark in stock visible. Rifle still retains its original tool in patchbox. Action is crisp. Ramrod appears to be the original. Many of these "Mississippi" were bored out, this example is original and of a scarce contractor. One of the most attractive of all U.S. Military long arms. CORRECTION: Front barrel band retaining spring has been repaired with the addition of a screw; this screw is visible in the pictures.
