This is an 1841 pattern US Mississippi rifle that has an original Dickson Nelson & Co lockplate in it. Lockplate is marked "ALA / 1864" at the rear. The rest of the gun is a standard 1841, brass mounted with patchbox. The markings on the barrel were removed a long time ago. Barrel is still in the original .54 caliber. No visible cartouches on the the left side of the stock, however there appears to be a small inspectors marking behind the brass trigger guard tang. Gun appears to have been together with this lock for a long time as the patina is matching. There are some older references to Dickson Nelson's having had brass patchboxes, however to date no authentic examples have surfaced. CONDITION: This gun shows evidence of having been cleaned a long time ago and has a pleasing patina returning to it. Brass has a pleasing even patina. Markings on lock are clear. Barrel markings removed as mentioned above. Wood has numerous dings and handling marks, with a chip out of the front of the lockplate cavity. Looks to have had an extra coat of varnish applied at one time. Bore has strong rifling with pitting. Fine mechanical function. GR
