This is a Model 1841 Mississippi rifle made by Whitney. Purchased by the state of New Jersey and so marked on the left side of the barrel. Brass mounted. Matching 1848 dates on the lock and barrel tang. This gun was bored to .58 caliber for use during the Civil War. There is a small bayonet lug stud on the bottom of the barrel. Front sight has been smoothed down. The barrel does not have the traditional obvious turn marks on it, however this is most likely one of the guns which was altered to take a socket bayonet which had an integral front sight. CONDITION: Metal retains a pleasing patina, however the barrel has been rebrowned at some point. All markings are clear. Brass shows signs of having been cleaned a long time ago but has a nice mellow color returning. The wood is worn with dings and handling marks. No visible cartouches. Bore is smooth with no rifling remaining and some pitting. Fine mechanical function. GR
