With the depletion of government stores of Civil War era socket bayonets, the 1880 variation of the trapdoor rifle was fitted with a new triangular rod bayonet, which slides forward from inside the stock. A total of 1,001 of these rifles were produced at the Springfield Armory in 1881. This rifle is fitted with a standard length 32 - 5/8" "V / P / (Eagle Head) / P" proofed blued barrel chambered for .45-70. Standard "R" marked rear sight and a hooded front. Full length walnut stock retained by 2 blued iron bands and fitted with a "US" marked trap butt with tools. Stock marked with script "SWP/1881" cartouche and 2 circle "P" proofs at the wrist. Case hardened breech block marked "US / MODEL / 1873" and blued side plate with federal eagle and "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD" markings. CONDITION: Fine. Rifle retains majority of its thinning original blued finish with losses to bands, butt, and side plate. Breech block exhibits some faded case colors. Stock good with expected dings, a section of wood replaced at the rear band and a small split at the lock plate. Very good bore with strong rifling. Fine mechanics. BAS
