Excellent example of a Model 1850 Foot Officer's sword complete with its matching steel scabbard. Crafted from high quality steel, the blade stands out with beautiful frosting that extends for a length of 20" starting after the ricasso. The blade is also adorned with simple yet distinct acid etched motifs and features the letters “U.S”. The letters are flanked with a panoply of military arms, delicate foliates of leaves, and scroll decorations. The other side of the blade exhibits the same design, but features a detailed federal eagle centered in the design and is flanked with military arms and more foliate. The maker’s inscription is located on the obverse ricasso and reads “Ames Mfg. Co / Chicopee / Mass.” in frosted script. The single-band brass hilt features a solid guard that is detailed with cutout oak leaf scrolls and acanthus leaves. The grip features a grooved, center-swelled wooden handle wrapped in high quality sharkskin. The skin is tightly bound to the grip with brass wire that fits neatly in the grooves of the handle. The brass pommel is decorated with scrollwork of laurel leaves and features a tiered cap. The original metal scabbard is complete with original brass furniture which remains tightly in place. The upper band displays the maker’s mark and reads “AMES MFG. CO. / CHICOPEE / MASS.". CONDITION: The blade has been very well preserved and retains its original polished bright sheen. There are slight areas of pitting along the spine and the ricasso exhibits a pleasant gray patina. The grip is in superb condition and the brass wire remains tight. The guard exhibits slight areas of aging but remains bright. The scabbard body retains most of its original bluing with slight areas of pitting and wear. Light dings on the drag. This is a fine example of a high quality and well preserved M1850 Foot Officer's Sword. Overall excellent. JLD
