Nice example of a Springfield Model 1880 hunting knife. The knife was designed as a multi-use tool for soldiers and could be used as a traditional knife, as well as an entrenching tool. This second style example is complete with a brass guard and original leather and brass hook scabbard. The brass guard is stamped "U.S. / Springfield" on the obverse of the throat and "180" on the reverse of the throat. The scabbard is marked "ROCK ISLAND / ARSENAL / W.T.C." on the reverse as well as "R.I.A" on the reverse of the brass belt hook. CONDITION: The blade exhibits a dark gray patina with areas of pitting throughout. The walnut handle is clean and displays light handling use. The markings remain crisp and the guard exhibits slight verdigris. The scabbard is in fine condition and displays scattered scuffs and scratches along with leather cracking towards the brass belt hook. There Is slight verdigris on the brass components. Overall good.
