Series 6 Type 38 carbine manufactured at the Mukden arsenal in Manchuria, China while under Japanese occupation. The left side of the receiver bears the series number, followed by the serial number and Mukden arsenal symbol, with the top of the receiver bearing a completely intact Japanese chrysanthemum above Kanji characters denoting the model designation. Major metal components are blued, with the rear sight spring, bolt release spring, trigger, and sear being strawed. Bolt and cleaning rod are in-the-white. Rear sight is comprised of a peep sight, similar to those utilized by Nagoya on later Type 38 rifles. Matching numbers are present on the receiver, forward barrel band, as well as on the bolt handle. Underside of receiver, bolt, extractor, safety knob, firing pin, and trigger are all appropriately matching via the assembly number "742". Safety knob appears to also match the receiver, albeit appearing to be an arsenal error, being stamped "617" inside of "716". CONDITION: Extremely fine, with metal components retaining the vast majority of their original arsenal applied blue finish, exhibiting few small spots of light wear overall. Buttplate shows some mild wear, thinning, and small spots of light oxidation. Strawed components retain bountiful amounts of their original finish, exhibiting areas of hardened cosmoline and some spots of age related discoloration. Bolt handle exhibits a mottled gray patina from handling and age. Mirror bore, exhibiting well defined rifling throughout. Stock shows some scattered marks from handling and storage, as well as some impressions and dings, but is otherwise fine. An exceptional example of a desirable Mukden manufactured Type 38 carbine that would be a difficult example to upgrade from. PROVENANCE: Roger Bender Collection. MLW
