Lot consists of (A) Civil War M1850 foot officer’s sword. The sword is in standard M1850 configuration with slightly curved blade, deep single unstopped fuller, cast brass hilt with wood grip wrapped in sharkskin and brass wire which fit neatly into the grooves. Marked with signature Klingenthal cursive on the spine. Missing scabbard. CONDITION: Blade exhibits a gray patina with scattered pitting and dark spots. Hilt also exhibits a pleasing patina with areas of loss to the sharkskin wrap and tight brass wire. Overall good. (B) Circa 1840’s militia sword. The maker mark is acid etched on the blade and reads “N.P. Ames / Cutler / Springfield,” a blade address used by the company from 1832 to about 1847. The blade is adorned with patriotic, floral, and other foliate motifs Hilt features a spread winged eagle crossguard, with the wings ending in ornate clamshell quillons, a bone grip which features checkered and palmette designs, chain guard, and eagle pommel. CONDITION: The blade exhibits a pleasing gray patina which slightly mutes the decorations. Guard and pommel exhibit a similar patina. Grip exhibits several cracks. Pommel produces a slight wobble when handled. Overall good.
