Henry Gibbs died in 1843. He was taxed as a gunsmith in Lancaster Borough, Pennsylvania, between 1812 and 1843. He built many flintlock and percussion guns that bear his signature. The smoothbore barrel is octagonal and stamped "H. GIBBS. / LANCASTER PA" on the top flat. Rocker panel engraving in front and back of rear sight. Stamp-engraved lockplate with rounded tail section, stamped "J. COOPER" in center. Brass furniture includes a pierced and engraved 4-piece patchbox with a folky floral design on the lid. Sideplate also engraved with rocker panel designs. The maple stock is of classic Lancaster form and has a stained faux grain finish to appear as tiger maple. CONDITION: Barrel markings excellent, retains a grey patina. Lock is a reconversion, markings good and retains a grey surface. Brass retains an appealing brown mustard patina. Stock retains its original finish, shows some scattered minor marks from use. A nice folky Lancaster rifle signed by a prolific maker. DMG
