December 13-15, 2022 Collectible Firearms & Militaria
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 12/14/2022
Letter dated Aug 14, 1779 letter to Gen. Greene detailing what appears to be Biddle's frustration at having his allowance reduced, and that he would be glad to retire if that is indeed the case. He expresses his desire to leave but doesn't want to leave the military if his absence would cause the "department to suffer". He mentions the very patriotic statement "the great work at which we are engaged" and is obviously a staunch patriot. During the American Revolutionary War, Biddle fought in the Battle of Princeton, the Battle of Brandywine, the Battle of Germantown, and the Battle of Monmouth. He was the Commissary General at Valley Forge under George Washington. Biddle eventually resigned from the Army in 1780, and this letter could be his first official notice of his intentions. CONDITION: 2 vertical folds with age toning along same with some period ink drop spots with all text legible. BRM.
