Lot consists of 4 items: (A) Revolutionary War document signed by John C. Calhoun as Secretary of War in 1818 certifying service by Capt. Elias Stilwell in the Revolution and entitling him to a pension. (B) 1781 certificate of William Jones for service in Col. James Livingston's battalion in 1780 and asking for pay due. (C) 1780 pay certificate with cancellation hole for David Johnson. Separation lines sewn together. (D) 1780 pay certificate with cancellation hole for Samuel Cook with similar sewn repairs. CONDITION: Good to very good overall. The contemporary repairs to the pay certificates are testimony to the long delays in settling claims of veterans.
CORRECTION: 2 additional documents are included in this lot: (E) 1782 Connecticut voucher for interest on pay due Mr. Comma Simons for his service in the Connecticut Line of the Continental Army. Signed on reverse by Simons and docketed for yearly receipt of interest through 1 February 1791. Simons had extensive service, signing up "for the war" June 1777 in Webb's 2nd CT for 1777-78, Sherman’s and Butler’s 2nd CT Battalion 1778-1780, and in the company of Roger Alden and Timothy Allyn in Webb’s 3rd Regiment of the 1781 Connecticut Line from Jan. 1, 1781 to Nov. 3, 1783. An interesting insight into American finances during the Revolution and the long term problems in compensating veterans. CONDITION: Good. Edge losses, folds, X-cut cancellation with small hole at center. (F) Connecticut pay order for “John Treadwell Esqr.” dated 8 February 1782. Signed by Treadwell on reverse the same day. This is likely John Treadwell (1745-1823), Governor of Connecticut 1810-1811. He was in the General Assembly 1776-1783, a member of the Confederation Congress, Connecticut Council of Assistants, and delegate to state convention ratifying the US Constitution. He held judgeships several times, was lieutenant governor 1798 to 1809 and governor 1810-1811, a member of the Federalist party’s controversial 1814/15 Hartford Convention, and part of the state’s 1818 Constitutional Convention. CONDITION: Excellent.
