Partisans of this form and style of decoration are well-known to have been used amongst the houses of Saxony including Prince-Bishops and electors. Partisan is comprised of a 20 - 1/2" spatulate blade with raised medial ridge and elaborate wings, etched with foliate designs, with central design etched with the coat of arms of Palantinate-Sulzbach; given the 1589 date, this partisan was made during the reign of Augustus. The crest is flanked by scroll and topped by an assortment of 5 knightly helmets, each with a different fixture atop, including a bull, an eagle, and other motifs. Both sides are acid etched with the same design. Head is mounted on a faceted poletopper, decorated with fringe, including a crown of strands and crosshatch design, fixed with peened straps that are nailed to shaft. CONDITION: Very good to excellent, with etching still crisp and legible throughout, with one side having slightly more patina but still discernible. Some inclusions along edge that do not detract. Visible delamination from forging. "P/6" is written on the faceted base, probably museum numbers. Haft is very good and possibly the original, with a noticeable bend in the haft toward base, and nails showing some chipping at heads, and plenty of hand rubbing throughout. Textile appears period and is extremely fragile; exercise caution. PROVENANCE: John. K. Lattimer Collection. EMW
