Baskethilts of this type are traditionally chiseled with busts that are believed to be Charles I, executed in 1649 at the conclusion of the English Civil War. Double edged blade with double 12" fullers, with evidence of a previous chrome plating that was chemically cleaned off. Basket hilt with crossguard deeply chiseled with opposing busts with geometrics on a stippled ground, bars decorated with slash marks and affixed to a globus pommel by newer screws. Braided copper wire hilt. Capstan shows evidence of reassembly. CONDITION: Blade essentially a dark patina, with evidence of previous chrome plating throughout that was chemically removed, with chemical trails throughout. Grip is very good with crisp engraving, with even oxidation throughout, mixed with flashes of dove grey. Nice delamination visible on bars. Wire grip is good with some gaps. Screws replaced. A nice example of an English Civil War period sword. EMW
