Rare and desirable example of the Model 1900 bowie bayonet for the Model 1898 Krag rifle. All of these bayonets were produced in the year 1900 and sources dispute whether 2000 or 2800 total examples were produced. However, it is documented that 1500 units were sent to the Philippines and 500 were sent to Cuba for field testing. The bayonet was officially designated as a combination entrenching knife and bayonet but field testing proved them to be inadequate for entrenching. The bayonet has a 9" clip point blade with a nice bright finish. The blade is stamped "US" on the obverse ricasso and dated "1900" on the reverse ricasso. The bayonet has a 2-piece riveted walnut grip. The steel scabbard is blued with functioning swivel hanger and ball tip. The bayonet is accompanied by a note from the collector that states this bayonet was purchased from the Columbus, Ohio Gun Show on July 11, 1964. CONDITION: The blade retains most of the original bright finish with slight pitting in a few scattered areas. Markings remain crisp with the “US” slightly faint at the bottom. The pommel and guard remain bright with a slight patina and scattered freckling. Grips exhibit light wear. The scabbard retains generous amounts of its original blue finish on the body and swivel hanger with scattered blemishes throughout. This is a very clean example of a rare Spanish American War bayonet. Overall very good.
