Rare and desirable first year production 1861 fluted Navy. With approximately 38,843 1861 Navy revolvers produced between 1861 and 1873. Only about 100 of these were fluted cylinder guns; out of this hundred guns how many went to our military? This one did and is serial number 72. It is U.S. marked under the "COLTS PATENT" on the left side of the frame. Single line address on top of the barrel "-ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA-" and a patent date at the bottom of one of the flutes on the cylinder: "PAT. SEPT 10TH 1859". The serial number is on the wedge, rear of the cylinder, barrel assembly frame, trigger guard, and back strap. The backstrap serial number is transposed and is number 27; this is a factory mistake. The grips are marked with a "K" on the bottom left side, at the top of the backstrap just below the hammer and just behind the trigger guard. There is a D on the underside of the barrel. German silver front sight with a V notch rear sight in the lip of the hammer. CONDITION: The barrel assembly has good blue in the protected areas with the remainder turning a pleasing plum-brown patina. The loading lever has silvered. There are generous amounts of case color left on the frame. The cylinder has some blue finish in the bottom of the flutes. The grips show some storage and handling marks. They fit the gun very well. Very good bore with very good lands and grooves. An above average and hard to find gun that would be a great addition to any collection.
