This scarce Revolutionary War-used model was carried by Lafayette's light infantry, with parts from this model dug at their campsites. Standard configuration French 1774 infantry musket with iron furniture. Original trumpet ramrod, slightly too short. The S-shaped sideplate is stamped with "ID" inspection mark. Barrel surcharged at center of breech with early large "US". Offset French proofs and "D75", denoting a 1775 date of manufacture. The convex lockplate is marked "Charleville" in center, with "(Crown) / N" French government proof. Features a 1774 iron pan, the touch hole has been rebushed during the period of use. Right side of buttstock is stamped "UNITED / STATES"; left side of comb is crudely carved with American initials "IW", probably the American who carried this musket. CONDITION: Metal components retain a smooth grey patina throughout. Stock shows some scattered marks from use. Some splinters missing along wood line towards muzzle, and a pair of professionally repaired cracks behind mid band. Tang has been tightened and has some applied color. Mechanically fine, bore with areas of oxidation. In its original flintlock configuration. An historic and important American-marked and used Revolutionary War musket.
