Originally manufactured as a standard configuration P.08 Luger by the Royal Erfurt Arsenal in 1916, this example was subsequently retained under the Treaty of Versailles and rebuilt for police issue. The receiver is stamped "1920/ 1916" over the chamber, with Erfurt arsenal proofs followed by an Imperial German reichsadler present on the right. Frame and barrel bear Erfurt "(Crown)/ RC" (Revision Commission) proofs. Toggle bears the intertwined "DWM" monogram. The receiver retains its Schiwy sear safety, and the frame was cut for Walther's magazine safety. Rear sight has been modified into a peep configuration, while the front sight was ground on the sides and a brass tip added at the top. Major metal components are blued, while some smaller components are strawed or nitre blued. The frame is mounted with 2-piece checkered walnut grips. Matching numbers are present on the frame, takedown lever, sideplate, trigger, safety lever & bar, barrel, receiver, trigger bar, extractor, forward, toggle links, and rear toggle pin. All numbers appear to have been renumbered to match during the period. The magazine is of later Mauser manufacture. CONDITION: Metal components retain the majority of what appears to be their period blue finish, exhibiting some areas of wear that show through to a gray and brown patina and some scattered spots of pitting present primarily below the finish. Strawed components retain fair amounts of finish, with the safety lever appearing to have been reheated. Bore exhibits pitting and fair rifling throughout. Grips exhibit some smoothing and a few scattered nicks but are otherwise fine.
