This Lancaster City made rifle is inscribed "B.D. Gill" for Benjamin D. Gill on the top flat of the octagon barrel. The rifle has a German silver front sight and a notched iron rear sight. The flat percussion lockplate is stamped "JOSEPH GOLCHER" inside a banner in the center, the tail is stamped with hunting scene. The rifle has an unusual combination of iron and German silver furniture. The trigger guard, buttplate, ferrules, and nosecap are iron. The 4-piece engraved and pierced patchbox is German silver, as is the wear plate, engraved toeplate, inlaid ovoid above the cheekpiece, and the inlay opposite the lock. The rifle is stocked in plain walnut. The cheekpiece appears to have been added during the period of use to suit the owner or shooter. The rifle has double set triggers. Ramrod appears to be original. Complete with a period wooden powder measure and an old tag that reads: "ORIGINAL POWDER MEASURE from JOE BUCHEIT COLLECTION - used in beef matches - St. Genevieve, MO 1954-55. OLD APPLETON, MO." CONDITION: Barrel retains a brown patina, signature very strong. Lock retains a brown patina with some light pitting, does not hold on cock or half cock. Tumbler a more recent replacement. Furniture shows some wear to engraving and minor marks from use. Iron furniture retains a brown patina. Stock shows scattered minor cracks, splinters and chipping around pins. From the Louie Parker Collection.
