A splendid example of an early US militia belt rig consisting of an early militia plate and ornate red leather belt. For a similar example of the plate, refer to O'Donnell & Campbell, plate 169. This plate is circa 1825-1835 and features an eagle that was modeled after the regulation 1821 cap insignia with an additional modified sunburst, national motto ribbon, and 13 5-pointed stars overhead. A number of similar designs were created, and this example is constructed of brass, gilded, with iron keepers. The belt is constructed of red leather, with tightly stitched center seam, and ornately decorated with embossed gold swirls as well as small panoplies of arms that are neatly placed throughout the length of the belt. The belt retains its leather sword hanger. The plate exhibits a pleasing patina with scattered light blemishes. The belt was stored rolled and remains quite supple but struggles to stay unraveled. Scattered creasing but a well-preserved example. CONDITION: Very good.
