Autograph Letter Signed, full page, folio, "Teneck or English Neighborhood" (New Jersey), August 27, 1780. Written by James Clinton, older brother of Governor George Clinton, to his son likely DeWitt Clinton, later Governor of New York and later Presidential candidate, then 11 years old. General Clinton reports on Continental Army activities in Northern New Jersey, specifically a foraging expedition in Bergen County that had been led by Nathaniel Greene. "I am but little better than when I left you but Endeavor to do my Tour of Duty. I returned Late Last Night from a Command of three Days the Light Infantry and Right Wing of the Army Marched to Bergen and Scoured all that part of the Country of Provision & forage Leaving just what were sufficient to support the Inhabitants. My Brigade Marched to Fort Lee where we could see N. York Fort Washington Long Island and almost all the Enemy camp. Tell Mrs. McClaghry I was within Six Miles of her Husband but could get no nearer on acct. of the River in the Night. We have no Material News at Present. I would be glad to see you here if you can conveniently come but I am Unwilling you should Loose much time from School. Tell your Mother I have Nothing to write to her but what I have wrote to you and not time to write My Love to her and all your Brothers and sisters and the rest of the family..." Signed at bottom "James Clinton". The letter exhibits yellowing with scattered staining. Ink with slight fading but all writing is legible. This letter is former Dr. John K. Lattimer Collection and is accompanied by his original 1986 receipt for purchase of this letter, a previous description, and a James Spence Authentication Full Letter of Authenticity. CONDITION: Good.
