Manufactured in Paris by Eugene Lefaucheux, son of famed pinfire cartridge inventor Casimir Lefaucheux, during the third quarter of the nineteenth century. This lovely example is period gold plated with a 6" round barrel, high bead front sight, hammer notch rear, 6-shot cylinder, single action, 2-piece walnut grips, and lanyard loop butt. Housed in a partitioned oak case with 4 rounds of period ammunition in a poor state of preservation. According to the consigner, this revolver was acquired from the estate of Douglas Wardlaw Ewell, a relative of Confederate General Richard Stoddert Ewell, who claimed the revolver was passed to him by his father, who inherited it from Ben Stoddard Ewell (Douglas' grandfather who lived from 1810-1894), a CSA officer and brother to General Ewell. It is worth mentioning that a number of field commanders carried these pinfire pistols, notably Jeb Stuart. The revolver comes with a copy of a letter of provenance describing the chain of history. CONDITION: Excellent. Revolver exhibits the vast majority of its gold plate with some small areas of loss and other wear. Grips are very fine with only light handling marks. Strong frosted bore, appears unfired. Mechanically fine. Case liner has some wear but still displays well.
