Factory letter states that this gun shipped on January 12th, 1903, to Simmons Hardware Company, St. Louis, Missouri, as a .41 caliber with a 3 - 1/2" barrel, blue finish, grips not listed, and sent in a shipment of 4 guns. The blue finish also means this gun has a case color frame with high polish fire blue finish on top and back of hammer, trigger and screws. The left side of barrel has the roll die stamped "COLT D.A. .41". Top of barrel has two line Colt address. Left side of frame has three line patent dates with Colt pony in circle. Grips are standard two piece gutta percha and not numbered. This sheriff's model has the short cylinder pin head. CONDITION. Excellent. The frame retains approximately 85% strong color, some brilliant. The recoil shield and loading gate are patina with pattern. The screws are true, and most of the fire blue remains both on screws and hammer, but trigger face is patina. Top of back strap has bright blue but back strap has turned patina. Trigger guard and front strap have majority of bright blue with high edge side wear. Cylinder retains most of the bright blue with high edge wear on flats and scattered circumference and light handling marks. Bright barrel blue with touch of muzzle wear. All legends are crisp. Action works properly in double action mode but single action does not work. Grips are excellent. Bore is bright. Hard to find high finish blue and case color sheriff model.
