Manufactured circa 1854-1860s. These were carried as a means of self-defense by Gold Rush miners and Civil War soldiers during the period and were popular with civilians as well. Features include octagonal barrel with brass blade front sight and notch rear sight mounted on breech tang. Marked "FR J. BITTERLICH & CO. / NASHVILLE, TENN" on breech and on back action lock. Mountings are German silver. German silver shield on grip near tang is numbered "2". Walnut stock with a checkered square butt grip. CONDITION: Very good, with iron assemblies turned a freckled gray patina. Stock has scattered minor chips around lock and a minor crack near lock retaining screw with finish loss at high edges. Mountings are a pleasant mellow patina. Action holds at full cock, but does not have a half cock. Bore is dark with soft rifling.
