For another similar example with this head, see page 138 in "The American Eagle-Pommel Sword" by E. Andrew Mowbray. The slightly curved blade has wide shallow fullers on both sides and long 20" panels of blue with two etched panels on both sides, along with other designs, including a standing Indian princess on the left and a patriotic eagle with "E. PLURIBUS UNUM" on the right side. The blade is engraved "SOLD BY / C & J.D. WOLFE / New York" on left side. Gilt brass hilt in the French style with acanthus-chased languets. Lion head quillon and, at the base of each side, a Roman helmet in front of a panoply of arms. Chased and stippled knucklebow connects below the beak of the Standish Barry eagle head pommel. Rosewood grip scales. Complete with its original brass scabbard with detailed panels of chased designs. CONDITION: Blade retains much original blue and gilt finishes, some areas turned to brown. Hilt also retains much of its original gilt finish with losses to high edges. Grips shows some minor marks from use and a couple hairline age cracks on left side. Scabbard shows generous traces of gilt and has been polished, some damage and a break towards tip.
