Circa 1840s early American Bowie knife by New Jersey cutler Hunter. Measures 13" overall with an 8" single-edge clip blade and a 2 - 1/2" false edge. Blade is very streamlined and has a pronounced choil that terminates in a narrow ricasso stamped 'ALFRED / HUNTER'. Oval, German silver cross guard with ball finials and sheet silver bolster. Grips are tall, thin rosewood slabs held in place with 2 small silver pins and a narrow silver escutcheon, with a thin flat silver pommel cap. Period scabbard with German silver throat and tip. A similar Alfred example can be found on pg. 326 of Flayderman's "The Bowie Knife", 2004. CONDITION: Very good. Blade previously cleaned with light scratches overall, sharpened edge and sharp tip. Scabbard stitching is tight, with throat slightly loose.
