An attractive example of a circa 1830s-1840s large bowie knife that was the product of English manufacturers. The knife features an 11- 1/2" clip point blade with a sharp 6" false edge. The blade exhibits a moderate gray patina with scattered blemishes. Blade is marked "CAST STEEL / BOWIE KNIFE" and features a weak mark on the ricasso that appears to read "JA ROYAL / CUTLERS / SHEFFIELD". Nickel silver guard, ferrule, and clam shell pommel. Nice checkered wood grip with 1 retaining pin on each side and a silver escutcheon on each side. Reverse escutcheon appears to have the date "1863" crudely scratched on it. Handle exhibits evidence of an older cleaning, as a mellow patina has begun to reset on the silvered components. Light cracks to the grip, especially around the pins. Complete with its leather scabbard with engraved designs that are in the shape of a clip point blade. Scalloped silver mounts with light dents and a pleasing patina. Leather body exhibits scattered creases and cracks with intact leather tie string. Throat is missing carry stud. CONDITION: Good.
