Beautiful early, pre-war Mauser action sporting rifle built for Charles Daly for the American market with desirable "CAL. 30/06 U.S. GOV't" chambering. Classic rust blued tapered 25" barrel marked on the top "CHARLES DALY ROCHLING ELEKTRIC STEEL" with German commercial proofs at the breech. Ramped gold bread front sight with 2-leaf express rear sight. Receiver is case hardened and very attractively engraved with fine scroll and a well executed bull moose on the receiver ring. Hinged floorplate likewise engraved with fine scroll and a pair of pointer dogs, the engraving extending onto the trigger guard with a pair of flying game birds. Stocked in finely checkered walnut with horn forend tip, capped pistol grip, cheek piece, toeline vanity plate engraved "RFK", and line engraved shotgun butt plate with trap door compartment. Sling swivels affixed to the underside of the barrel and butt. CONDITION: Very fine. Barrel retains nearly all of its original blue with some scattered marks. Receiver, bolt, and grip cap retain strong and attractive, rich case colors. Bottom metal and butt plate have largely faded to a soft gray patina with a few flashes of color in protected areas. Stock has some scattered impressions. Checkering remains razor sharp. Bore is fine and bright with strong, well defined rifling throughout. Fine mechanics. A truly outstanding Prussian rifle built for the American market, an exquisite addition to any sporting gun collection.
