Per an included factory letter the serial number was applied to this rifle on September 6, 1899 and it shipped out September 25 of the same year. As is also documented by the included factory letter, this rifle is in highly desirable .50-100-450 chambering. John Madl notes that only 232 '86s were chambered in this big bore round, more potent than the earlier .50-100-300 Express. Rifle features a blued 26" barrel stamped "50-100-450" with Lyman bead top blade front sight and desirable platinum lined 3-leaf express rear sight. Receiver is very attractively case hardened, as was done as a very professional aged restoration. Stocks are plain straight grain walnut with case hardened nose cap and crescent rifle butt plate. CONDITION: Very good overall. Barrel retains significant portions of factory blue, especially in protected areas, the balance drifting to a chocolate patina. Frame retains very generous reapplied case colors with some areas of muting and mild cleaned oxidation. Nose cap and butt plate have colors that do not appear retouched, mostly faded to patina. Stocks retain the majority of their original varnish with some expected wear and impressions and other marring. Bore is strong and bright with some evidence of cleaned mild oxidation. Fine mechanics. A very attractive and desirable Winchester 1886, a true bucket list big bore gun for any Winchester collector.
