A descendant of the iconic WWII Liberator pistol supplied to partisans, the simplified cast aluminum design was developed for the CIA as the Cold War was heating up in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Only 1,000 of the single shot 9mm pistols were ordered from American Machine and Foundry based on a 1962 prototype designed by Russel J. Moure, around 200 of which were sent to Vietnam for field testing. Little is known of their service; however, it is believed most were eventually destroyed with less than 25 estimated to have survived. This lot includes 2 complete frames with internals, as well as 3 screw-in barrels, and extra components including a breech, trigger, and cocking piece/firing pin. CONDITION: Relic. Aluminum shows oxidation and deterioration with the internals seized. Barrels likewise show oxidation. These intriguing clandestine pistols are rarely seen in any condition and would make an interesting addition to any 20th-century military arms collection.
