A desirable Type 90 flare pistol that was used by the Imperial Japanese Navy from 1930-1945. The flare pistol is finished in a black lacquer with 3 barrels. Finish exhibits scattered scratches but most remains. Each barrel is marked with a rectangular stripe to indicate the type of flare to be loaded, yellow bordered by red on the left, solid white on top and black with green borders on the right. Top barrel is marked with the Kayaba Seisakusho symbol, cherry blossom, inspection proof, and naval anchor. The Kayaba mark is repeated on the right side of the frame in front of the serial number. Red and white filled safety markings, with functioning switch. The switch to select which barrel will be fired is stiff and does not move. Checkered wood grips are intact with wear throughout. The lanyard ring accommodates an original US inspection tag indicating that the flare pistol was examined by US intelligence and passed so the piece could be sent home as a war souvenir. The tag is marked “Signal Pistol #3220” which matches the serial number of the flare pistol, and is signed by a naval ensign. A seldom encountered flare pistol, as only 5,100 were produced. CONDITION: Good.
